This half term, we will be writing information texts and poetry based on the Romans. Our focus will be to use conjunctions (if, so, when, although, because) and prepositions (inside, above, around, on) to extend our sentences. We will use a range of rich and varied vocabulary to make our writing more interesting. We have a massive focus on handwriting and presentation. The children are ready for this challenge with their new pens!
We will be working really hard on our reading skills. We will be making predictions, summarising texts and inferring characters thoughts and feelings. We are trying to encourage the children to read more at home, so please record any reading they do in their home reading record. Continuous reading really helps their development by improving their overall literacy skills, general knowledge and absolute love of reading.
Children will be having a weekly spelling test, which will be done on a Monday. Children will be given words from the Year 2 Common exceptions words or the Year 3 and 4 Spelling word list. Please encourage children to practise these at home as this will help greatly with their writing. Here are some spelling strategies we use:
This half term, we will be working on multiplication and division, adding and subtracting money and statistics. As always, we are still working on our times tables. You can practise at home, especially on Times Table Rockstars. By the end of Year 3 children should know fluently their 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 times tables. In maths we try and encourage the children to draw out their strategies. Here are a range of some of the strategies we use:
This half term, we will be developing our history skills. We will be investigating a range of artefacts from past; asking questions and make connections between our own lives and the past. We will study the Romans and our local area of Colchester.
In Science, we will be learning all about light. Our little Scientists, will be discovering how to complete their own experiments, how to record results and then explain what has happened.
We have PE on Wednesday and Thursday. Please remember to have a full kit for these days and no earrings are to be worn. Thank you.
