This half term, we will be writing stories and persuasive texts based on Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. Our focus will be to use inverted commas for speech, to use a range of rich and varied vocabulary and to write detailed paragraphs. We will continue to improve our writing with our use of conjunctions (if, so, when, although, because) and prepositions (inside, above, around, on) to extend our sentences. Last term we saw a MASSIVE improvement on handwriting and presentation. I know this will continue throughout year 3.
Thank you for all the effort of lots of home reading, it really does have a positive impact on everything in the classroom. Our class book will start with Jeff Brown's 'Flat Stanley, which I know the children will thoroughly enjoy. This term we will continue to make predictions, summarise texts and infer characters thoughts and feelings. Continuous reading really helps their development by improving their overall literacy skills, general knowledge and absolute love of reading. Remember to complete the reading rocket bookmarks.
Children will be having a weekly spelling test, which will be done on a Monday. Children will be given words from the Year 2 Common exceptions words or the Year 3 and 4 Spelling word list. Please encourage children to practise these at home as this will help greatly with their writing. Here are some spelling strategies we use:
This half term, we will be working on statistics, length and perimeter and fractions. As always, we are still working on our times tables. You can practise at home, especially on Times Table Rockstars. By the end of Year 3 children should know fluently their 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 times tables. In maths we try and encourage the children to draw out their strategies. Here are a range of some of the strategies we use:
This half term, we will be developing our D and T skills. We will be investigating a range of shell structures; investigating a range of existing products and use computer technology to design and construct a product.
In Science, we will be learning all about rocks and fossils. Our little Scientists, will be discovering different types of rocks; discuss how fossils are formed; study the scientist Mary Anning and recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.
We have PE on Wednesday and Thursday. Please remember to have a full kit for these days and no earrings are to be worn. Thank you.
