This half term, we will be writing sequel stories and explanation texts based on David Weisner's 'Tuesday'. Our focus will be to write more extended pieces of work, using a range of rich and varied vocabulary and detailed paragraphs. We will continue to improve our writing with the use of co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions (if, so, when, although, because) and prepositions (inside, above, around, on) to extend our sentences. Last term, we saw a continued improvement on handwriting and presentation. I know this will continue throughout year 3.
Thank you for all the effort of lots of home reading, it really does have a positive impact on everything in the classroom. The children have chosen Jeff Kinney's 'The diary of a Wimpy Kid' as our class read, which I know the children will thoroughly enjoy. This term we will continue to make predictions, summarise texts and infer characters thoughts and feelings. Continuous reading really helps their development, by improving their overall literacy skills, general knowledge and absolute love of reading.
Children will be having a weekly spelling test, which will be done on a Monday. Children will be given words from the Year 2 Common exceptions words or the Year 3 and 4 Spelling word list. Please encourage children to practise these at home as this will help greatly with their writing. Here are some spelling strategies we use:
This half term, we will be working on fractions and time. As always, we are still working on our times tables. You can practise at home, especially on Times Table Rockstars. By the end of Year 3 children should know fluently their 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 times tables. In maths, we try and encourage the children to draw out their strategies. Here are a range of some of the strategies we use:
This half term, we will be developing our Geography skills. We will be using and drawing maps, understanding different settlements, and studying weather patterns around the world. What does this map tell us about Colchester ?
In Science, we will be learning all about heat and temperature. Our little Scientists, will be using their questioning and predicting skills; planning and conducting experiments; processing and analysing data and information; and evaluating and communicating.
We have PE on Tuesday and Thursday. Please remember to have a full kit for these days and no earrings are to be worn. Thank you.
