In Baker Street, we are hardworking and determined which is evident in our class motto ‘can’t do it yet!’ We strive to be kind, friendly and caring to each other to ensure that the classroom is a positive and enjoyable environment.
This term we will be working hard to develop our Growth Mindsets and as a result adopt a positive approach to all our endeavours and learning. We will embed this mindset throughout Year 2, our time at Cherry Tree Academy and our lives.

Summer Term 2021
This half term, we are reading the text 'The Three Little Pigs- A Twisted Tale'. We are using this as our stimulus to write our own twisted traditional tales. At Cherry Tree, we use the Talk for Writing process, where we follow three stages: imitation, innovation and invention. For the rest of this academic year we have a strong focus on SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).
In Year 2, we love and value reading. All children read every morning and once they have finished their book , they quiz. Also, every child is heard read at least once a week, with a short discussion about what they have read. Our class book is 'Revolting Rhymes' by Roald Dahl. We have daily guided reading sessions and we practise and apply key comprehension skills. Year 4 uses reading VIPERS to help us remember these important skills.
In Maths, we will be learning to count, read and write numbers to 100. We will also be using these skills represent numbers to 100 including recognising the value of each digit . Additionally, we will also be applying our knowledge of place value to order and compare numbers using different representations. Throughout the term, we will also deepen our understanding of place through learning to solve real life practical problems that involve all of the above.
In our Connected Curriculum, we make links between the subjects, where possible. History, Art and D & T are the main subjects for this term. Our connected curriculum follows three stages: Stage 1, Teacher directed. Stage 2, Teacher led and Stage 3, Pupil led. This term our focus is Geography.

Times Table Rockstars
It is really important for the children to know their times tables. Here at Cherry Tree Academy we have found a fun way to learn our times table. Times Table Rockstars! Children can have their own rockstar name, they can listen to rock music as they learn their tables, even play tournaments! All the children have been given usernames and passwords- if you are unsure please ask the class teacher. Click the link below to start rocking out!!
NumBots is an online game and playing little and often will significantly improve your child’s recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts. These are critical foundations in maths so we are excited by the impact NumBots will have.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a really effective software tool used by an increasing number of schools to foster reading growth. It encourages students to read widely and independently whilst allowing staff to monitor progress and support where necessary.
The programme is designed to work out a reading level (or STAR reading level) for students at the start (by means of a STAR test, completed in English lessons). Students then read books within this level – all books in the library that are registered with AR have a coloured star label on the spine to help them recognise books within their ‘zone’. Students take a quiz on the website after reading each book to assess how well they understood it. Their STAR level is tested every other term to see how they have progressed.
